Paris+ par Art Basel – this somewhat cumbersome name refers to the new contemporary art fair, Parisian, of course, which will replace the previous FIAC and is, of course, the most anticipated event in the international art calendar.
The second edition of Paris+ par Art Basel will once again take place at the Grand Palais-Ephemeral, an impressive temporary structure built to host events while the real Grand Palais is being renovated.
The fair is held from October 19th to 22nd. A total of 154 galleries from 34 countries will be represented, including regulars from major events: Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, Gagosian, Continua, Almine Rech, Pace, Lelong & Co. and Bloom & Poe. Some of these major international galleries have recently opened new branches in Paris.
Since Brexit, David Zwirner, Gagosian, White Cube and Hauser & Wirth have opened branches in the French capital, increasing its appeal as a global art hub, especially compared to London, and revitalizing the French contemporary art market.
After the Swiss group MCH Group (actually the owner of Art Basel) organized the first edition of Paris+ last year, several major venues reported that they liked it and were successful.
Thus, gallery owner David Zwirner sold a painting by Joan Mitchell for €4.5 million, Kamel Mennur sold a painting by Giacometti for €2.7 million, Hauser & Wirth sold Boy George’s apartment for €2.6 million, and Luhring Augustine sold a painting Christopher Wool for €1.5 million.
It was spectacular. At the same time, colleagues are grumbling: while the MCH Group attracts about 70 thousand visitors to its long-standing event in Basel, the first edition of Paris+ par Art Basel last year attracted only 40 thousand people. And this is the Grand Palais, and not the Turkish outskirts of a non-main city in Switzerland. And they say that entrance tickets are very expensive.
