Berlusconi’s heirs want to get rid of his worthless collection

The heirs of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who died this summer, were faced with the task of placing somewhere his private collection, consisting of approximately 25 thousand paintings, sculptures and other works of art, reports La Repubblica. The problem is that almost all of these items have no value, since they were bought by Mr. Berlusconi mainly in TV stores. And paying for a warehouse specially rented by the ex-prime minister to store the collection will cost approximately €800 thousand per year.
The Italian publication quotes art critic and former member of parliament Vittorio Sgarbi, who claims that Silvio Berlusconi spent only about €20 million to create his entire collection. According to him, this collection is “monstrously entertaining”, but is worth little, a complete “daub” only “six or seven” items from it are of any interest. “Nothing was studied, he was just running around with the idea of buying a bunch of works of art, no matter what,” said Vittorio Sgarbi.
Most of the items, he said, were purchased in the very last years of the life of Silvio Berlusconi, who at that time had insomnia and spent his nights watching television auction channels. According to Mr. Sgarbi, the heirs were thinking about simply destroying the collection altogether, leaving for themselves the few valuable items that were in it. The art critic notes that he does not know whether the heirs have begun to implement their plan. “I don’t know this, but I do know that, at least from an artistic point of view, it would not be a crime,” he added.
