Pap Ndiaye says he is “confident” despite “structural difficulties”

This year, more than 4,000 positions have not been filled in the teacher competitions in primary and secondary schools, a historically low rate which raises fears of a back-to-school period under high tension. However, the Minister of National Education, Pap Ndiaye, says “confident that the return to school will go as well as possible” in schools, colleges and high schools, despite this unprecedented crisis which has forced the ministry to hire many contract workers.
“There are structural difficulties linked to the attractiveness of the profession, but at this stage we are confident that the start of the new school year will go as well as possible for the students of the Créteil academy, and beyond of course for all of the territory “declared the minister to AFP on Tuesday August 23 during a trip devoted to this subject to the rectorate of Créteil, an academy which brings together part of the departments of the Paris region (Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne and Seine-et-Marne) and is particularly affected by recruitment difficulties.
Difficulties “in certain disciplines”
On site, the Minister notably met the members of the back-to-school unit set up to best respond to the requests of schools and establishments in terms of staff.
In this academy, “at this stage, the situation is comparable, if not slightly better, to that of last year at the same time”, according to Mr. Ndiaye. But “there are difficulties in certain disciplines” secondary, in particular for vocational high schools, and “we are working on it”he added, promising that there would be “a teacher in front of each class in all schools in France” in September.
Faced with these difficulties, the ministry notably resorted to recruiting contract workers from June during controversial “job dating” days, interviews organized in several academies. Today, contract workers represent 1% of the teaching staff in the first degree and 8% in the second degree, with strong geographical disparities, all the academies not being affected in the same way by the shortage of teachers.
Reinforcement of contract workers
“It is true that we use a proportion of contract teachers which is significant, particularly in this academy, because of the educational needs that we have heresaid Pap Ndiaye. We must respond to this by improving the attractiveness of the teaching profession. These are structural measures that we are going to take in the months to come. In the meantime, we are recruiting as best we can. »
The rector of the Créteil academy, Daniel Auverlot, said “have no worries for the start of the school year”. “In the first degree, we have retained 700 contract employees who already exist, and we are completing the recruitment of around 200 additional contract employees.he assured. In secondary education, we have already recruited and retained 1,400 contract employees. »
In the first degree (nursery and elementary schools), barely more than 900 candidates were recruited in the teacher competitions in the Créteil academy, out of 1,665 open positions.
