Chinese UnionPay cards operating abroad are issued by only seven banks: Gazprombank, Post Bank, Solidarity, Rosselkhozbank, Russian Standard, Primsotsbank and RRDB. The newspaper reported “News”.
MTS-Bank and Uralsib stopped issuing UnionPay cards after they fell under US blocking sanctions in February 2023. These cards disappeared from the lists of banks available for registration on the website of banks, the termination of their issuance was also confirmed in support services. As explained in MTS Bank, the refusal to issue is due to foreign restrictions.
UnionPay cards of Zenit, Primorye and St. Petersburg banks, which also fell under US blocking sanctions, work only in Russia. They also still issue cards of this payment system, however, they warn that they cannot be used to pay abroad.
Russian banks began to offer cards of the Chinese payment system UnionPay after Visa and Mastercard left Russia. Kommersant wrote that many foreign online stores do not accept payments with UnionPay cards issued in Russia. In December UnionPay introduced limit on cash withdrawal abroad from cards of Russian banks.
