The departure of Visa and Mastercard payment systems and the disabling of Apple Pay and Google Pay payment services did not affect the majority of Russian citizens, they write Vedomosti. From the results of a study of the opinions of bank customers by the B1 audit and consulting company (formerly Ernst & Young (EY)) it follows that only 17% of respondents completely stopped using gadgets for payment, 54% of respondents continue to use Visa cards, Mastercard – 44%.
Despite the fact that on March 5 Visa and MasterCard suspended activities in Russia, the cards of these payment systems continue to operate on the territory of the country, since the processing of transactions is carried out by the Russian National Payment Card System. At the same time, it is impossible to get a new card in Russia.
However, most of the clients of Russian banks did not notice the departure of Visa and MasterCard, since 64% of them actively use the cards of the national payment system Mir, the study says. The cardholders of the Chinese payment system UnionPay are only 2% of the respondents.
From February to March, the banks surveyed by Kommersant observed a sharp increase in demand for Mir cards, after which interest in them stabilized, but still remains high. According to Sberbank, the average value for the total issuance of cards of all payment systems for May-October 2022 was almost at the level of May-October 2021. At the same time, about 1.5 million Mir cards are tied to Pay-services, which allows customers to pay for purchases using a smartphone.
