One of Churchill’s most famous photographs was stolen from a hotel in Ottawa

A black-and-white photo of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s “Roaring Lion” was stolen and replaced with a copy at the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa. It has been in the reading room of the hotel since 1998.
“We are deeply saddened by this brazen act… The photograph of Winston Churchill has been replaced with a copy,” the hotel said in a statement (quoted from CTV). Other photographs have been temporarily removed from the reading room as a precaution.
A picture of Winston Churchill without a cigar was taken by Canadian photographer Yusuf Karsha (1908-2002) in December 1941 after the speech of the British Prime Minister in the Canadian Parliament. Usually, Mr. Churchill was photographed with a cigar, but Mr. Karsha personally took the cigar from him for this picture. Since the 1970s, the photographer has lived in the Chateau Laurier, where he also had a photo studio.
