Oil prices rose 2% after US and British strikes in Yemen – Kommersant

Brent oil prices rose 2% to $78.94 per barrel (+ $1.54) after the escalation in Yemen, reports Reuters. On Friday night, the United States and Britain launched strikes against Yemen’s Houthi targets in response to their attacks on international ships in the Red Sea.
Futures for US West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose by 2.1% to $73.55 per barrel (+ $1.53). The value of the underlying indices, as Reuters adds, increased by almost 1% compared to the previous day.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reported that the US and British military carried out airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen. The attack, according to Mr. Biden, was supported by Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands.
At the end of 2023, shelling of international ships in the Red Sea increased amid the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Yemen’s Hamas-backed Houthis are striking ships they associate with Israel.
