On the site of the burned-out Sindika market in Myakinino near Moscow, the first hypermarket of the German DIY network OBI will appear in recent times. The site belongs to the structures of Senator Arsen Kanokov, who are now believed to control the retailer’s Russian business. The new facility could replace the former OBI hypermarket in Khimki, also destroyed by fire. Market participants were surprised by the plans to build retail real estate from scratch: now, taking into account the growth of online sales, DIY networks, on the contrary, minimize the opening of new offline outlets.
Sindika Holding plans to build an OBI hypermarket with approximately 30,000 sq. m. by 2025. m in Myakinino, on the 65th km of the Moscow Ring Road, the investment will amount to 3.5 billion rubles, Kommersant was told in the company. The hypermarket will appear on the site of the construction market that burned down in 2017 and belonged to the holding. A residential complex “Strogino Quarter” is being built next to the future facility – this is a joint project of Sindiki and Samolet Group of Companies. OBI did not respond to Kommersant’s request.
The German OBI GmbH has been operating in Russia since 2003. In the spring of 2022, due to hostilities in Ukraine, the chain suspended the work of 27 of its hypermarkets in the Russian Federation, and then withdrew from local business. In August 2022, GISK MAX LLC became the owner of OBI structures. After that, the owners of the Russian OBI business changed three times, and since April 2023, Allonge JSC has become it, follows from the data of the Unified State Register of Legal Entities. The beneficiaries of this company are unknown, but Maryana Gilyasova, who also heads TK Sindika-O, the structure of the Sindika holding owned by Senator Arsen Kanokov, is listed as its CEO.
The new OBI hypermarket can replace the retailer’s facility in Khimki that burned down in December 2022. The network reports indicate that the operation of this store has been discontinued. It also says that in February of this year, the chain closed a hypermarket in Surgut. Now in 13 cities of the Russian Federation, as indicated on the OBI website, 25 stores operate under this brand. According to Infoline, in 2022, OBI’s revenue decreased by 36.5% year-on-year, to RUB 26.5 billion, and ranks eighth among DIY retailers.
The new hypermarket will be the first facility built after the change of ownership of the Russian subsidiary, as well as the chain’s largest hypermarket in Russia. Now on the company’s website, the largest retailer’s store indicates an object in Omsk – its area is 15 thousand square meters. m.
Mikhail Burmistrov, CEO of Infoline-Analytics, notes that OBI in Russia has started a business transformation. According to him, with the arrival of the executive director of the network Maxim Suravegin, who previously headed the Garden direction at OBI, the company strengthened its competencies in the categories of goods for home and garden, which made it possible to strengthen competition with Leroy Merlin, which is considered the leader in this segment. To expand its range of home furnishings, OBI began, for example, working with some former IKEA furniture suppliers in Russia.
At the same time, according to Mr. Burmistrov, taking into account the growth of online sales in the DIY market, it would be more efficient to build a compact hypermarket with an area of no more than 5-6 thousand square meters. m. In the DIY segment, the construction of new large stores is now rare, agrees independent expert Irina Bolotova. Often, market players optimize and improve existing outlets, especially in terms of interior concepts and additional services, she says. According to the expert, competition in this market remains high, especially against the backdrop of restrained purchasing power.
In general, demand in the market of building materials and household goods has intensified since April 2023 due to the revival of individual housing construction, says Mikhail Burmistrov. If this trend continues, he predicts an increase in the turnover of the DIY market by the end of the current year. According to Infoline, at the end of 2022, this segment decreased by 6.2%, to 2.5 trillion rubles.
