NOVATEK Receives Patent for Advanced LNG Technology “Arctic Cascade”

NOVATEK announced the receipt of a Russian patent for the technology of liquefying natural gas “Modified Arctic Cascade”. It is based on the Arctic Cascade technology already implemented on the fourth line of Yamal LNG.
“The technology has been improved taking into account operational experience, allows to reduce the number of pieces of equipment and increase the energy efficiency of the production process,” follows from messages companies. NOVATEK added that the developed solutions allow the use of equipment from Russian manufacturers.
At the heart of the “Arctic Cascade” is the liquefaction of natural gas using the climate of the Arctic. The technology provides for one cooling circuit instead of the usually used two, since the gas is pre-cooled due to low air temperatures in the Arctic. NOVATEK explained that this would reduce the cost of LNG projects while maintaining high productivity.
The Modified Arctic Cascade technology is planned to be applied to NOVATEK’s large-capacity projects in the Arctic region (Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG-2). The capacity of one technological line, the company claims, will be 3 million tons of LNG per year.
The Arctic Cascade on the fourth line of Yamal LNG was launched in June 2021. The technology was patented by NOVATEK and became the only LNG line in Russia built on the basis of domestic equipment. Previously, lines of LNG projects in Russia were built using foreign technologies. Equipment suppliers for the fourth line were ZiO Podolsk, a member of Rosatom, Kazankompressormash (HMS group) and Cryogenmash (OMZ group)
