On October 25, Norilsk Nickel launched the first stage of the sulfur program at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant (NMZ) worth 180 billion rubles, the company reported.
According to Norilsk Nickel, the company’s metallurgical plants in Norilsk currently emit 1.8 million tons of sulfur dioxide per year. Replacing equipment as part of the sulfur project will reduce emissions by at least 20% in 2024. Over the course of 2025, emissions will decrease by 45% from 2015 levels.
The company calls the sulfur project the largest environmental modernization of enterprises in Russia. The total investment will amount to 300 billion rubles, which will be used to modernize the production capacities of both the Nadezhdinsky Metallurgical Plant and the copper plant in Norilsk.
At the sulfur project, 90% of the equipment is Russian or produced in friendly countries. Norilsk Nickel noted that some foreign companies refused supplies due to sanctions. Previously, the company delayed the start of the project, postponing the start of modernization at the copper plant by two years.
