No destructive changes were detected during the stay of Andrei Rublev’s “Trinity” icon at the All-Russian Art Scientific and Restoration Center named after I. E. Grabar. This was announced by the director of the restoration center, Dmitry Sergeev, following the results of observations of the relic. The Trinity icon to the restoration center delivered July 19.
“We have summed up the results of monitoring the icon’s more than two-month stay in the center of Grabar. No destructive changes are observed. Everything is stable. We can say that the conditions have been created ideal. This observation is important for further clarification of the parameters for its storage in the future,” said Mr. Sergeev at the restoration council on the issue of preserving the icon at the Ministry of Culture (quoted by Interfax). As the director of the center clarified, the icon is kept in the required and stable conditions, and its condition is monitored by specialists.
The icon of Andrei Rublev “Trinity”, painted in the 15th century, has been in the Tretyakov Gallery since 1929. In May 2023, President Vladimir Putin decided to transfer the icon to the Russian Orthodox Church, after which it was exhibited in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior on the holiday of Trinity. Since July 19, “Trinity” has been in the Scientific and Restoration Center named after. I. E. Grabar. It is planned that later the icon will go in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The decision to transfer the ancient icon to the church caused criticism in the museum and restoration communities.
