Nikolai Tsiskaridze: “Bastards live behind the scenes”

Premier of the Bolshoi Theatre, rector of the Vaganova Academy, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Nikolai Tsiskaridze spoke live from the MK press center about the theatre, working with students and how to overcome weakness.
“I never associated theater with work, I considered it some kind of fairy tale,” says Nikolai. – Every day you have to stand at the barre, go to class, rehearse for many hours – a child does not understand such things.
Mom intimidated me, but later I told her that she made a mistake – she didn’t show me life behind the scenes. It was later that I realized that it was even worse behind the scenes, that not fantastic creatures live there, but bastards.
I loved to oppose my mother in everything, we were very different people: if she demanded something, I did the opposite. After a while, I realized that she was wise, and in all her words there was worldly experience, but you don’t come to this right away, of course.
“As for my students, I don’t feel sorry for them. Pity, in my opinion, is the most disgusting feeling. This is a humiliation, says Tsiskaridze. – And this is a profession that does not need squishy, weaklings and crybabies.
Crying is a weakness, and I don’t have time for that. I can accept today’s defeat, a lost battle is not a war. And I will win the war.
If I want to have fun, I put on old Soviet or Disney cartoons – and I feel good. I don’t feel sorry for myself, why should I feel sorry for myself? Take it and fix it. Any tears are caused by one feeling – self-pity.
It has nothing to do with compassion, a person does not cry for someone – he cries for himself. It’s not my idea, it’s serious research.”
