Nikkei: Japanese companies enter into LNG contracts with the new Sakhalin-2 operator

Two Japanese companies have signed contracts for liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the Sakhalin-2 operator, sources say Nikkei. According to the newspaper, none of the eight Japanese companies receiving LNG under this project has expressed a desire to refuse supplies. Sakhalin-2, by decree of the President of the Russian Federation, was previously transferred to Russian jurisdiction.
The contracts were awarded by Tokyo Gas and JERA (a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power and Chubu Electric Power). It is alleged that the terms of delivery and purchase prices have not changed after the change of operator. According to Nikkei, Hiroshima Gas is 50% dependent on Sakhalin II LNG, Kyushu Electric Power and Toho Gas are 20% dependent, Tohoku Electric Power and Saibu Gas are about 10%.
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin translated Sakhalin-2 operator to Russian jurisdiction. Japanese Mitsui and Mitsubishi own 12.5% and 10% respectively in the Russian project. Japanese authorities asked the company not refuse to participate in Sakhalin-2.
