New Year’s trees have increased in price. And this applies to both living and artificial trees. However, according to market players, Christmas tree purchases in November 2023 are more active than in 2022. The first Christmas tree bazaars are already opening in Moscow, and New Year’s paraphernalia is being actively bought on marketplaces. What caused the price increase? In 2023, the volume of live spruce trees harvested in Russia will increase by 5% compared to last year. In total, according to the specialized state organization Roslesinforg, 57-60 thousand spruce, pine and fir trees will be put up for sale. Almost a third of this number will be brought from the Kemerovo, Sakhalin and Novgorod regions, as well as the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
At the same time, prices for trees, according to the OFD Platform company, increased by 5-7%. On average, a live Christmas tree will cost 1.3 thousand rubles. However, the cost of premium Russian varieties can be many times higher, says Sadovod.org CEO Yuri Resnyansky:
“All imports have become more expensive, both premium and the rest. Russian trees have increased in price quite a bit – by about 7-8%. New Year’s pine – from 2.5 thousand to 4 thousand. Delivery will begin only the other day. The required sizes are quickly running out, so our clients are already making reservations in September. Small sizes are sold out. There are more or less medium and small ones left.”
Premium Christmas trees, which are traditionally brought to Russia from Denmark, have risen in price much more – by 30-40% – due to the devaluation of the ruble. Judging by market analysis, prices for such varieties can reach 100 thousand rubles. Among the most popular New Year’s species are Fraser fir and Nordmann fir, says the co-founder of the company “Yolki. Biz” Vladimir Borisov:
“Domestic fir trees and pines are cheaper, imported trees are more expensive. The most popular are Nordmann fir and Fraser fir. Both have very soft needles, you can fall on them and nothing will happen. These trees are no longer bought by just wealthy people, but by very rich people. Imported trees have risen in price especially strongly in 2023. Trade is now very active, they are buying for offices, street spaces, where Christmas trees do not fall off.”
However, the greatest demand now is for artificial spruce trees, the average price of which is 5 thousand rubles. This is 20% more expensive than last year, according to the OFD Platform. Artificial spruce trees have been produced in Russia for a long time, but raw materials still have to be imported, says Vladislav Pukharev, director of the Elki.ru company:
“Yes, they have gone up in price. In fact, there are quite a lot of producers of domestic Christmas trees in Russia; they have already established both casting and PVC production, the quality is premium. The rise in prices can only be associated with the rise in price of the plastic itself, which is still imported from abroad. But the main reason is logistics and fuel costs.”
On the Wildberries marketplace, sales of artificial Christmas trees have increased by 50% this year compared to last year. The press service of the service stated that they had already sold more than 350 thousand units, and the average purchase receipt was approximately 3 thousand rubles.
The OFD platform also records an increased demand for Christmas tree decorations. Most buyers purchase them online, and sales exceed last year’s figures by 30–40%.
