The Ukrainian company Naftogaz has filed a petition with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to recover $5 billion from Russia, Reuters reports.
“Since Russia has not voluntarily paid the funds to Naftogaz, as provided for by the arbitration award, we intend to use all available mechanisms to recover these funds,” Naftogaz head Alexei Chernyshov quoted Reuters as saying.
In April, a court in The Hague ordered Russia to pay $5 billion compensation Naftogaz for facilities in Crimea, which the state-owned company lost after the peninsula became part of the Russian Federation in the spring of 2014. The court ruled that the amount should be equal to the fair market value of the assets prior to their expropriation. Prior to the annexation of Crimea to Russia, Naftogaz owned a number of large assets on the peninsula, including the subsidiary Chernomorneftegaz with the production of about 1.6 billion cubic meters of gas per year, underground storage, a gas pipeline system and two offshore drilling platforms.
In the Kremlin spokethat Russian experts will analyze the decision of the court in The Hague, after which the Russian side will decide on its further actions.
