Izvestia: environmentalists proposed to abandon certain types of plastic containers

Russia may ban a number of types of plastic packaging, writes Izvestia newspaper with reference to the presentation of the Russian Environmental Operator (REO), presented at a meeting in the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The ban may be introduced as early as next year, limiting the use of the first five types, bringing their total number to 20 by 2030. Such a temporary benchmark is indicated in the federal project “Circular Economy”, the newspaper notes. Environmentalists explain the need for a ban by the fact that such containers are difficult, and sometimes impossible, to recycle.
REO proposes to ban PET bottles of non-traditional (i.e., non-white, transparent blue, green and brown) colors first, such containers are used for the production of drinks. In addition, environmentalists propose to ban thin shrink film, which is used as a label on bottles for drinks and yogurts, a mesh bag for vegetables and fruits, and plastic capsules for coffee.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade, the newspaper notes, also prepared a report on this topic to the government, but did not indicate the timing of the introduction of restrictions. The agency proposes to ban four types of plastic containers: “acidic” PET bottles, thin shrink film, containers with PVC labels, and packaging that uses insoluble adhesives. At the same time, the ministry indicates that they are not going to ban the production of all plastic products, since it will hit both the packaging industry and consumers.
“The main focus is the gradual removal of plastic packaging that cannot be recycled from the assortment of the packaging industry and its replacement with fully recyclable polymer structures,” they said.
