The chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation, Nikita Mikhalkov, believes that Russia should not nominate its film for the Oscar of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It’s pointless, the director is sure.
The Russian Oscar Committee, which after the death of director Vladimir Menshov was headed by Pavel Chukhrai, chooses a picture that could qualify for an Oscar. We are talking about the permanent nomination “Best Foreign Language Film”. Films that were in commercial distribution during the calendar year can be nominated for the American Film Award. To be nominated from the country, it is necessary to decide on it in the fall.
Meanwhile, director Andrei Konchalovsky said earlier that our country should nominate its film for an Oscar. Konchalovsky was supported by a member of the committee, director Alexei Uchitel.
“Choosing a film that will represent the Russian Federation in a country that, in fact, now denies the existence of Russia, is simply pointless,” Mikhalkov said, also stressing that he had left the committee.
Mikhalkov had previously proposed the creation of a Eurasian Film Academy that could present its own award. Now the project, according to the director, is under development.
