Media: Italy demanded from Airbnb more than 500 million euros in unpaid taxes

The Italian tax authority accused the American service Airbnb of tax evasion. The authorities demand more than 500 million euros from the company, informs Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper.
According to the law on short-term rentals of 2017, citizens for whom renting out housing is the main type of income directly pay a 21% tax. If the rental of housing is related to additional income, then online platforms act as tax agents, withholding 21% of the rent charged by homeowners. The services are then required to pay the withheld amount to the state.
The publication notes that Airbnb has been in talks with the Italian authorities for some time to precisely determine the group of landlords for which the company should pay tax. The dispute, in particular, concerns citizens for whom renting out housing is not their main job. The amount of taxes that Airbnb will have to pay to the Italian state, including depends on the number of such landlords, says the newspaper.
Il Sole 24 Ore writes that Airbnb received a request from the tax office after the European Court of Justice ruled that the 2017 law did not conflict with EU law.
The 500 million euros in unpaid taxes is the largest ever requested after the 870 million euros that the Italian tax authorities demanded from Meta (recognized as extremist and banned in Russia). The country’s authorities accused the company of non-payment of VAT, the newspaper reports.
