Mazepin, co-owner of Uralchem, spoke about the work on unblocking the export of Russian ammonia through Odessa

Dmitry Mazepin, founder and former majority owner of Uralchem, Russia’s largest fertilizer producer, spoke about the details of a plan to unblock ammonia exports through the Ukrainian port. We are talking about deliveries through a pipeline that connects the Togliattiazot plant (Uralchem is its parent company) with the port of Odessa. According to him, he presented the plan during meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin in November.
“I asked for help through diplomatic channels to once again revise the agreements that were signed in Istanbul regarding the grain deal to resume the supply of ammonia,”— reminded Mr. Mazepin in an interview Financial Times (FT) details of the meeting with the President. According to him, the Istanbul agreement included a commitment to resume the export of ammonia (a key ingredient in the production of nitrate fertilizers).
According to the plan, a US or other non-Russian trading company “selected from among three or four top international traders” would buy ammonia from Russia and transport it through Ukraine to the port of Odessa, from where it would be shipped across the Black Sea. Dmitry Mazepin said that exports could start immediately, adding that about 80% of the production will go to African countries. “We are ready to resume pumping,” he said. The UN expects that the recovery of ammonia production will lead to lower world prices.
After the European Union imposed individual sanctions against him in March, Mr Mazepin shortened his stake in Uralchem to 48%, which is below the control threshold, and resigned as the company’s CEO, recalls FT.
Russia accounts for 10% of the world production of chemical and mineral fertilizers and about 16% of exports. As for the export of ammonia, then, according to Dmitry Mazepin, by the end of next year, Uralchem plans to launch a port in Taman to ship goods.
