Maly Theater artists remember Yuri Solomin: “He didn’t let us down”

The Maly Theater is in shock – artistic director, People’s Artist of the USSR Yuri Solomin has died. The first artistic director was not appointed, but chosen by the team and colleagues.
“I remember how he was elected at that historic meeting,” Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Alexander Bely told MK. – In December, his leadership turned exactly 35 years old. Everyone then voted for him.
And I was lucky from the very beginning – I studied with Yuri Mifodievich, graduate of 1987. He was very strict with us and incredibly demanding. He didn’t let anyone down. No hack job could work with him. And he didn’t indulge in praise, which we fools were offended by. Already when I was accepted into the theater, he once praised me on the day of my entry into the play “Tsar Fyodor Ioanovich” for the role of Shakhovsky. Then they played, and Yuri Mifodievich came up to me: “United States, well done,” – he just said and walked into the dressing room with the steps of a king.
