Container carrier Maersk said it intends to resume deliveries through the Red Sea. They were suspended company on December 15 due to several Houthi attacks on shipping in the region.
The carrier explained that it decided to resume deliveries amid the decision of several countries, led by the United States, to conduct military Operation Prosperity Guardian (OPG) in the Red Sea to ensure the safety of ships. “As part of the OPG initiative, we are preparing to allow ships to resume transit through the Red Sea, both east and west,” Maersk said (quoted by Axios).
In an advisory to customers, the company clarified that “the overall risk in the area has not been eliminated” and shipping could be suspended again if problems arise. “We plan for the first ships to transit, and for this to happen as soon as possible. At the same time, ensuring the safety of our employees is of paramount importance and is our priority,” Maersk added.
December have become more frequent shelling ships sailing in international waters in the Red Sea as war breaks out between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement. Yemen’s Houthis, who support Hamas, have carried out missile or drone strikes against ships they believe are associated with Israel. By data CNBC, $35 billion worth of cargo was redirected around the Red Sea.
