Maersk presented the first biofuel ship – Kommersant

The world’s largest maritime cargo carrier, the Danish company Maersk, yesterday, September 13, presented its first ship powered by biofuel. The vessel has two engines – one is a regular diesel engine, the other runs on methanol. Maersk says that when running on such fuel, the ship emits 100 tons of carbon dioxide per day less than with conventional diesel. Yesterday the ship made its first trip to sea in the Copenhagen area.
Maersk ordered the vessel in 2021. According to the general director of the company, Vincent Clerc, then it was the first ship of its kind. Since then, various companies have already ordered 125 such vessels. Maersk itself should already have 25 such ships by 2024. The company has also already signed nine agreements with green methanol producers to boost its supply. Maersk previously said it plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. Analysts from NewClimate Institute and Carbon Market Watch, who have studied promises and plans to reduce emissions of 25 corporations, including Google, Amazon, Volkswagen, Unilever, considered the Maersk program the most realistic.
Maritime cargo transportation accounts for about 3% of all harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Another option for reducing maritime shipping emissions is electric cargo ships. There are already examples of such vessels – for example, the Norwegian Yara Birkeland – however, for now they can only transport relatively small loads over short distances.
