A poem has been discovered in which deceased Nobel laureate Louise Gluck described her death in detail.
American Russian poet Vladimir Gandelsman on his page on a social network banned in the Russian Federation listed translations into Russian of poems by Louise Gluck.
The writer, who died on October 13, 2023 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, received a Nobel in 2020 “for her unmistakable poetic voice.” Meanwhile, it began to be translated into Pushkin’s language 20 years before its worldwide fame.
“The first translations appeared in the book “Six Poets” / translator I. Mizrahi,” reports Gandelsman, clarifying that this event occurred in 1999 in St. Petersburg.
And in 2002, in the Bronx, with the participation of Gandelsman himself, Gluck’s bilingual collection “Poems” was published.
It was in the American edition that the poem “Lamentation” was discovered about the death of the beloved lyrical heroine, where Louise described her own death:
Oh, I finished the song. At the fountain
the willows are singing again
with inexpressible tenderness, branches
watching myself in the shining water.
They see so clearly. He dies again
and peace be with him. This will be forever
at least until my death.
On social networks, Russian writers from Russia and abroad publish posts about Gluck’s death or her poems. The fact that she was gone has been known for 14 hours; the Americans responded to the event 8 hours ago, but the wave of mourning reached the Russian-language segment of the networks only during these hours.
