Libyan National Oil Corporation (NOC) declared force majeure due to a complete shutdown of the Al-Sharara oil field from January 7. Due to the actions of the protesters, fuel supplies to the port of Zawiya were also interrupted.
“The National Oil Corporation declares force majeure at the Al-Sharara field starting from January 7, 2024 as a result of its blockage by protesters,” the message states. The supply of crude oil from the field to the port of Zawiya has also been completely stopped. Production at the Ash-Sharara field was 300 thousand bpd.
Residents of the Fezzan region in the southwest of the country announced a strike on January 2. Local residents regularly complain about interruptions in fuel supplies, insufficiently developed infrastructure and an increase in smuggling. Protesters are threatening to block another major Lebanese oil field, El Fil.
El Fil and Ash Sharara were blocked by protesters from the Al-Azwiya tribe from July 13 to July 16, 2023. Then the reason for the protest was the detention in Tripoli of their fellow tribesman, the former Minister of Finance in the Government of National Accord (GNA) Faraj Boumtari.
