Swiss cruise operator MSC and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri may be delaying the launch of their latest luxury cruise ship, Explora I, because the ship’s fire-resistant panels do not meet safety requirements, according to a report. Financial Times with reference to sources.
The Explora I is one of four luxury boats that Fincantieri is building for MSC. The liner has 14 decks, swimming pools, spas, nine restaurants and hundreds of luxury rooms with hot tubs and private terraces, according to the FT.
According to the interlocutors of the publication, the panels installed on the 248-meter vessel were manufactured by the Finnish company Paroc. Back in early May, Fincantieri was notified that the type of panels used on the Explora I had been stripped of its safety certificate.
Similar problems may affect another 45 liners, which are equipped with Paroc fire-resistant panels, sources said. The FT, citing data from the International Cruise Lines Association, reports that there are fewer than 300 cruise ships in operation worldwide.
