Today, January 31, in the morning, power unit No. 2 of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) was scheduled to be shut down due to the end of its service life. The 2nd power unit operated for 45 years. Initially, the service life of RBMK-1000 reactors operating at nuclear power plants was 30 years, but after technical modernization it increased by 15 years. The 2nd power unit generated more than 256 billion kWh of electricity: this volume is sufficient to provide the current level of electricity consumption for 4.3 million Russian residents during the entire 45-year life of the power unit.
“As in the case of power unit No. 1, which was shut down in December 2021, normal operations will be carried out at unit 2 in the future, which, in fact, are practically no different from regular planned shutdowns,” explained the general director of the Rosenergoatom concern. Alexander Shutikov. He added that the replacement of retired capacities will be invisible to electricity consumers: by the end of 2024, the Kursk NPP-2 is planning to launch a new innovative power unit No. 1 with a VVER-TOI reactor.
Kursk NPP is one of the top four nuclear power plants in the country of equal capacity and is an important node of the Unified Energy System. Its main consumer is the Center energy system, which covers 19 regions of the Central Federal District. On December 22, 2023, the Kursk NPP reached the target level for electricity generation set by the Rosenergoatom concern in the amount of 19.97 billion kWh.
During the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine, several incidents occurred near the Kursk nuclear power plant.
