In the first nine months of 2022, black tea exports from Kenya fell by 22%, to 333.4 million tons. Bloomberg with reference to data from the Tea Board of Kenya.
That means exports for all of 2022 will also decline, analysts say, for the first time since 2017. However, as production from other major exporters, including Sri Lanka, also declined, Kenyan tea producers’ revenues are likely to rise this year. Among the reasons for the drop in exports is the worst drought in Kenya in decades, as well as reduced demand from the largest tea importers.
Kenya is one of the largest tea exporters in the world. According to Statista, it ranks third after China and Sri Lanka. The main importers of Kenyan tea, accounting for 69%, are Pakistan, Egypt, the UK and the UAE.
