Polar Lithium, a joint venture between Norilsk Nickel and the state corporationRosatom”, received the right to use the largest lithium deposit in Russia – Kolmozersky, located in the Murmansk region, Norilsk Nickel said in a statement.
The license was obtained as a result of an auction for the right to use a subsoil plot for geological study, exploration and production of minerals, conducted by the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use. The size of a one-time payment for the use of subsoil amounted to 1.56 billion rubles, the period of use of the site is 20 years.
As notes “nornickel”, discovered in 1947. The Kolmozerskoye deposit is the most promising Russian lithium deposit, which also contains beryllium, niobium and tantalum.
The Kolmozerskoye field development project involves the production of lithium carbonate and hydroxide in the amount of 45,000 tons per year. These minerals are used, in particular, in the manufacture of batteries.
Norilsk Nickel Technical Services and Rusburmash, a specialized enterprise of Rosatom’s mining division, will begin additional exploration of the deposit in the coming months. Completion of design and exploration work is planned in a few years, and reaching the design capacity by 2030.
The partners plan to create an integrated production facility, from mining and processing to the production of high-tech products, which will replace the import of both lithium raw materials and battery components into Russia.
