Today’s review will focus on the so-called blue chips of the global auction market. That is, artists whose works are included in the top sales rankings. Last season, the contribution of authors from the top 10 to the global auction turnover amounted to 27% of the total volume – $630 million.
In the 22/23 season, only four contemporary artists received auction bids of more than $10 million: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Yoshitomo Nara (twice) and Christopher Wool. If you compare, for example, with the 20/21 season, this is very little.
Then the $10 million threshold was exceeded 26 times. Among the record holders at that time were the British Banksy, the Romanian Adrian Gheni, and a lot of Chinese, such as Liu Ye, Zhou Chunya, Zhang Xiaogang, Chen Danqing, Liu Xiaodong, Lei Junyi, who slowed down in market development.
Here’s what the top 10 list looks like based on last season’s total sales. The first is undoubtedly Jean-Michel Basquiat. For 13 years in a row, by the way. Last season, his paintings received a total of $235.5 million – 10% of the world contemporary auction turnover.
He accounted for 6 of the 11 10-million-dollars of the season, including one in the “50 plus” category. This is El Gran Espectaculo (“The Nile”) from 1983 – a huge three-part panel 3.5 m long. It went for $67 million. It is curious that in 2005 this work was bought for $5 million. Over 18 years, the price has increased 13 times.
The second was Yoshitomo Nara with a result of almost $100 million. He was ahead of Banksy, who has almost $50 million. Next come Cecily Brown, Jeff Koons, Keith Haring, Christopher Wool. Damien Hirst was again in the top ten. Then – George Condo and Mark Grotjahn, who rose from 16th place. Now the American has $30 million.
And about losers. Last season, Koons’s largest work, Jim Beam Train – J.B. Turner, a sculpture from the series “Luxury and Degradation”, sold for $16.9 million. And in 2014, this large model train made of polished steel (filled with whiskey) was sold , I remember, for $33.7 million. True, the previous owner seemed to have drunk whiskey.
