The Japanese company Tohoku Electric Power has signed a contract to continue purchasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) with the new operator of the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project, LLC Sakhalin Energy. The agency reports Nikkei.

The terms of the deal do not change. Tohoku Electric Power will purchase 420,000 tons of LNG per year, or 10% of total purchases.

Previously, a similar contract was renewed by Kyushu Electric Power, Tokyo Gas and JERA. In addition to them, Sakhalin-2 has other long-term contracts, including with Hiroshima Gas, which depends on LNG from the Sakhalin-2 project by 50%, Toho Gas – by 20%, Tohoku Electric Power and Saibu Gas – by about 10%.

The operator of the Sakhalin-2 project was previously Sakhalin Energy, but in June Russian President Vladimir Putin replaced it with the Sakhalin Energy created in the Russian Federation. Foreign shareholders had to decide whether to continue cooperation or withdraw from the project.
