Japanese trading company Mitsui said it intends to comply with indirect US sanctions on Russia’s Arctic LNG 2 project, Reuters reported. In it, Mitsui and JOGMEC own shares of 10%. This week, the United States imposed sanctions, as a result of which Arctic Transshipment LLC, involved in the development of the Arctic LNG-2 project, was blacklisted.
“We are aware of additional US sanctions and remain committed to complying with international sanctions,” the company told Reuters. Mitsui noted that the company has been in contact with other project participants and the Japanese government on this issue to “discuss further steps.”
The French Total also has a share in Arctic Transshipment (10%). Other foreign shareholders of Arctic LNG 2 are also considering entry into the project – Chinese CNPC, CNOOC and a Japanese consortium with the participation of Mitsui.
A Japanese government source told Reuters that the sanctions could make it difficult for Japanese investors to support the Arctic LNG 2 project, as well as affect the timing of the launch of production at the site.
On September 14, the US Treasury imposed sanctions against contractors for the construction of LNG production lines for projects of NOVATEK Arctic Energy LLC and its structures. The same list included Arctic Transshipment LLC, which manages two LNG storage vessels (floating storage unit, FSU) in Murmansk and Kamchatka, as well as the vessels themselves – Saam UGS and Koryak UGS.
