The National Payment Card System (NSPK) plans to launch payment using QR codes for cards of the Mir payment system. Merchants will be able to read QR codes in the bank’s app to debit cards. The newspaper reported “News” with reference to the NSPK technical bulletin.

NSPK also developed a system for protecting the new payment method. Transactions should not contain card data, but a link to them, follows from the bulletin. The requirements will come into force on April 25, 2023.

According to Izvestia, payment by QR code for Mir cards became available for implementation in the fall of 2022. At the same time, the preparatory work for the operation of this method has not yet been completed. Some banks plan to allow QR code payments for their customers in 2023.

In December 2022, Kommersant wrote that the NSPK obliged Russian banks to provide payment by QR code for Mir cards until the end of April 2023. According to experts, because of this, about half of all POS terminals in retail outlets, which today number about 4 million, may need to be replaced.
