Italy’s financial guard seized more than €779 million belonging to Airbnb, which owns the home rental service. According to investigators, the company did not pay a fixed tax for five years, reports La Repubblica with reference to a statement from the Milan prosecutor’s office.
The press release states that there are three suspects involved in the tax evasion case who held “administrative positions in a foreign company between 2017 and 2021,” the publication reports. The suspects are reportedly accused of failing to submit tax returns between January 30, 2019 and January 30, 2023, La Repubblica reports.
IN Reuters clarified with reference to the Milan prosecutor’s office that the audit at Airbnb is due to the fact that the company does not withhold 21% of income from rental housing, as required by Italian law. The company told the agency that it was disappointed with the decision of law enforcement agencies and emphasized that Airbnb operates in accordance with Italian laws.
