Russian electronics stores have begun to sell already activated iPhones more often. About this practice was known before. But now several large retailers are issuing warnings. Among them are M.Video-Eldorado, DNS, Citylink and MTS. Izvestia was the first to draw attention to this.

The description for the gadgets says that the model “could be activated before sale, without being linked to an Apple ID account.” It is separately stated that this does not affect consumer characteristics and the warranty period from the seller. Who activates the iPhone and why? The editor-in-chief of vilianov.com, IT expert Sergei Vilyanov, considers this a way to avoid sanctions:

“We cannot supply smartphones over $300; all iPhones, even the cheapest ones, are subject to this restriction. Theoretically, we shouldn’t have them, and everyone who sells them to us automatically falls under sanctions. However, if the phone is turned on outside our country and activated, then re-activation in Russia from the point of view of sanctions no longer matters.

On the one hand, some distributors are worried, especially the United Arab Emirates, which is the main supplier. On the other hand, our sellers are worried because every time iPhones arrive from some new place, and they do not always know whether the smartphone will be packaged or not. Therefore, it is better to write a warning.

You can activate your phone without a SIM card; you just need to turn it on, enter your Apple ID, activate it, and then reset it. The procedure takes about 10 minutes per device. This is quite a lot considering the volume. Of course, this adds some hassle, but people seem to cope.”

There are risks in such a scheme, but they concern primarily the seller, not the consumer, notes Renat Grishin, editor-in-chief of the AppleInsider.ru portal: “Problems can only arise for the one who originally bought these phones from Apple.

To date, there have not been any reported cases of a consumer having their iPhone locked remotely.

In such a situation, of course, the question may arise whether they will sell you an already used device. But if we talk about official resellers, then there is hardly any risk of buying a used phone under the guise of a new one. Because officially selling a used phone as a new one will not work, it is difficult and simply expensive. It is unlikely that you can earn anything from this at all. You need to try very hard, put yourself in a lot of places and set up your partners from whom these phones will be purchased.”

The M.Video-Eldorado network told Kommersant FM that activated gadgets are not presented in stores, and their purchases are not made. The information on the site concerns limited batches that came online earlier.
