Students listen to a teacher in a classroom on back-to-school day at a high school in Lyon, September 1, 2022.

For the first time in two years, it was not the health constraints, lifted at the start of the new school year, which accompanied the return to school of nearly 12 million students on Thursday 1er and Friday, September 2. Concerns about the Covid-19 epidemic have given way to those about the teacher recruitment crisis, which has raised doubts about the ability of national education to recruit enough teachers to carry out its mission.

The Minister of National Education, Pap Ndiaye, promised at the beginning of the summer that there would be “one teacher in every class”, despite the 4,000 positions that remained vacant following recruitment competitions. The return takes place in “good conditions”affirmed the minister, Thursday, during a trip to a college in Airaines (Somme), while acknowledging that this did not mean that ” All the problems [étaient] rules “ and that there was “difficulties here and there, in certain disciplines or in certain academies”.

Several teachers have indeed reported since Wednesday, the day of their pre-entry, vacancies in their establishments. In secondary education, the SNPDEN, the majority union of school heads, launched a survey, the partial results of which show that the objective had not yet been achieved in colleges and high schools.

“At the moment, we don’t have a teacher present everywhere, notes Bruno Bobkiewicz, secretary general of SNPDEN, and headmaster of the Hector-Berlioz school complex in Vincennes (Val-de-Marne), where three teachers were missing on Thursday evening. The rectorates are working to find replacements. Assignments can be done very quickly. We have until Monday, when the schedules really start. »

Wire assignments

In the first degree, attention is focused on the academies of Créteil and Versailles, where approximately 1,400 positions have not been filled in the competition out of a little over 3,200 and where the unions have reported classes without a teacher at the homecoming morning. “We have had a few cases of vacancies in schools due to last minute adjustments”recognizes the rectorate of Versailles, specifying that these situations have been “settled within half a day” by calling on replacement brigades. “There are no major difficulties compared to previous years”we are assured, as in each of the academies.

These assignments on the wire are the lot of each new school year and always last several days, recognize the unions. It is still too early to know if there are more of them this fall, and if they will lead to more instability for students in the event of a succession of replacements.
