The Russian film distributor Central Partnership (part of Gazprom-Media) has developed a new cinema format that contains specifications similar to IMAX. About it Vedomosti said the CEO of the company Vadim Vereshchagin. The Russian analogue, called “Cosmax”, is in the process of obtaining a patent.
The development of Cosmax was carried out by the technical department of Central Partnership. According to the company’s CEO, the cost of creating Cosmax did not exceed 5 million rubles. The debut film, which will be presented in this format, will be Klim Shipenko’s film “Challenge”, partially filmed in space.
The cinema hall for showing a film in the Cosmax format should be equipped with a digital film projector and special sound equipment, Mr. Vereshchagin noted. “In order to convert the footage to Cosmax, the picture must first be shot in high resolution, with certain cropping, etc. Cosmax will be able to support any open format. But the maximum quality will be achieved only when showing a picture taken in this format,” he specified.
The IMAX technology is owned by a Canadian company of the same name, which, according to representatives of the Theater Owners Association, has stopped operations in the country since June 1, 2022. However, IMAX did not publicly announce the termination of operations in Russia.
In March 2023, the Moscow Arbitration Court ordered the IMAX corporation to fulfill the contracts concluded with one of the legal entities of the united cinema network Formula Kino and Cinema Park. We are talking about trade mark and maintenance contracts concluded in 2008. According to the court decision dated March 22, if it is not executed within five days, the court will collect a penalty of 200 thousand rubles. for each day of failure. Representatives of IMAX were not present at the meetings.
