Analysts from the Kontur.Focus service conducted a study that showed that the number of bookstores in Russia decreased by a third during the period from January 2020 to October 2023. This means that about 4 thousand stores have disappeared from the market. At the same time, the number of new store openings was less than a thousand. Thus, the number of liquidations exceeded the number of registrations by 4 times.
The study also showed that the largest number of bookstores are located in Moscow, the Moscow region and St. Petersburg. More than 500 companies are engaged in this business in Moscow, and about 300 in the Moscow region and St. Petersburg. In addition, 35 stores were opened in the Donetsk region, while there were none in January 2020.
