In Russia, for the first time, mobile Internet traffic has decreased

In the second quarter of 2022, mobile Internet traffic decreased by 2.3% compared to the first – from 8.54 billion GB to 8.35 billion GB, according to “News” with reference to the data of the Ministry of Digital Development. Mobile Internet traffic in Russia decreased for the first time in history. Market participants and experts attribute this to the blocking of foreign Internet resources.
The reduction in the volume of mobile Internet was confirmed to the publication by the press service of MegaFon and MTS. “In 2022, we did not see its traditional growth from March to May,” said an MTS representative. Tele2 said that Internet traffic in the second quarter decreased by 1.6%. VimpelCom (Beeline brand) declined to comment.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation told the publication that in July, cross-border Internet traffic in the Russian Federation also reached a plateau, declining by 1% compared to January. The ministry considers the decrease in mobile Internet traffic and cross-border traffic to be insignificant and claims that there are no prerequisites for reducing Internet speed.
“In March 2022, Roskomnadzor blocked a number of foreign social media that violated the requirements of Russian law. The market of online cinemas and music was left by foreign suppliers of media content. Covid-19 restrictions were lifted, citizens returned to their usual work schedule, ”the Ministry of Digital Trends said the alleged reasons for the decrease in traffic.
In TelecomDaily predictthat by the end of 2022, the growth in prices for mobile and broadband services will be 15-18%. Representatives of the operators say that the increase in prices that has already taken place has ranged from 2% to 15%, but argue that the increase does not exceed inflation in any case. After the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, basic foreign roaming services from Russian telecom operators went up by 5-40%.
