In Novosibirsk, a performance with a mustachioed princess is checked for “LGBT propaganda”

Deputy Minister of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region Grigory Milogulov said that the regional department decided to check the play “The Princess and the Ogre” at the First Theater in Novosibirsk because of alleged complaints from the audience. Earlier, Telegram channels circulated messages referring to the director of the performance, Polina Kardymon (by now, the original publication on her behalf has been deleted). According to duplicate posts, the director reported a “denunciation” that someone wrote about her performance for children based on the poem of the same name by Henryk Sapgir. The director reportedly said that “scammers were outraged that a man with a mustache played the princess in a children’s play” and was allegedly suspected of “LGBT propaganda”. The director herself, as reported, recommended officials from the Ministry of Culture to get acquainted with the history of the ancient Greek theater, where only men played the roles, and also to remember that it is men who often play Baba Yaga in Russian cinema and theater.
Deputy Head of the Novosibirsk Ministry of Culture Milogulov declared “Rise” that “it is planned to organize a viewing of the performance by the expert theater community of the region,” which will be joined by members of the public council at the regional ministry of culture.
“After that, a discussion of this production will be organized,” the official added.
According to the creators of the performance and the audience who watched it, there are no actresses in the production at all, only four male actors. They play the roles of all the numerous characters, among which there is a princess.
As wrote “MK Novosibirsk”, the city hall urged not to be too critical of the performance of a female role by a male actor. “We grew up on Gorodok, where Oleinikov and Stoyanov constantly changed clothes,” said Vice Mayor Anna Tereshkova. “Tsiskaridze also dances with us <...> in a women’s suit, it is absolutely justified and has always been used.”
