The farewell ceremony for People’s Artist of the USSR Yuri Solomin is taking place at the State Academic Maly Theater, which he directed for 35 years. Mr. Solomin died on January 11 at the age of 88.
The coffin is placed on the stage of the theater, soft music is playing. There is also a screen showing scenes from his films and photographs of the artist from different years, TASS reports. The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, Alexander Bastrykin, who called Yuri Solomin “the keeper of the great traditions of the Russian dramatic theater,” RIA Novosti reports.
Yuri Solomin died a day after being discharged from the hospital where he was taken after a stroke. Condolences over his death were expressed by President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Patriarch Kirill, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova.
Mr. Solomin was accepted into the Maly Theater troupe in 1957, and in 1988 he became its artistic director. He has roles in almost 60 films and TV series. Yuri Solomin also taught at the Higher Theater School named after. Shchepkin and was a professor at the acting department.
