“August 22, according to the terms of the contract, the deadline for payment for gas supplies to Moldova, which includes the final payment for July and payment for gas supplies in August, has come. The Moldovagaz company was able to pay only for July deliveries and turned to Gazprom with a request to postpone the payment deadline for August to September 1, 2022. Gazprom, as an exception, decided to agree with this request. We proceed from the fact that in the future the Moldovan side will certainly fulfill its contractual obligations in full and on time,” said Kupriyanov (quote by Interfax).
In October last year, Moldovagaz and Gazprom extended the gas supply contract for five years. According to the formula proposed by Chisinau, the price of gas is partly linked to the oil product basket and partly to spot gas prices in Europe. Thus, in November, the purchase price of Russian gas for Moldova was $450 per 1,000 cubic meters. m. Under the contract that expired in September, Moldova paid for gas an average of $148 per 1,000 cubic meters. m.
August 17 “Moldovagaz” asked about the postponement of advance payments for August and September 2022, Vadim Cheban, the head of the company, announced in his Telegram channel. According to him, the increase in the gas tariff, which was approved by the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) in early August, does not allow Moldovagaz to fulfill its contractual obligations. ANRE raised gas prices from 18.62 lei to 23 lei per cubic meter (based on the average purchase price in 2022, which is $899 per 1,000 cubic meters), while Moldovagaz asked to raise the price to almost 30 lei per cubic meter to cover the tariff deviations.
Moldova’s gas debt is estimated at $709 million.
