In Europe, LNG has become more popular than pipeline gas for the first time

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to European countries (EU and UK) in May 2023 exceeded pipeline gas supplies for the first time in history. This is stated in the monthly report of the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries (GECF; unites 12 countries, including Russia, Qatar and Iran, which control 72% of the world’s gas reserves and provide 44% of production).
According to the GECF, LNG supplies to the EU and the UK amounted to 13.95 billion cubic meters in May. m (in regasified form), pipeline gas – 13.73 billion cubic meters. At the same time, relative to May 2022, LNG imports increased by 14%, while pipeline gas imports decreased by 37%.
