Today, August 26, the regional commission of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug made a decision (.pdf) on the early termination of salmon fishing in the Anadyr Estuary and the rivers flowing into it. From midnight on August 27, a ban on industrial fishing begins to operate, and from midnight on August 29 – on amateur and traditional fishing.
Usually the salmon fishing season in Chukotka lasts until the end of September, but it can be terminated early. Two years ago, fishing was stopped on August 25, this year such a decision was made on the recommendation of the Pacific branch of VNIRO (TINRO), the Federal Agency for Fisheries and the branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Glavrybvod. The reason is the poor occupancy of spawning grounds, this figure is 5%. According to representatives of TINRO, the ban on fishing will help preserve the Anadyr chum salmon population.
According to regional authorities, more than 3.3 thousand tons of salmon have been harvested in Chukotka, the bulk of which falls on commercial fishing.
