India purchased $215.1 million worth of diamonds from Russia in August. This was a record since March 2018 (then the country bought $481 million worth of diamonds), RIA Novosti reports, citing data from the Indian Ministry of Trade and Industry.
At the end of summer, India increased imports of Russian diamonds fourfold on a monthly basis and by 9% on an annual basis. In general, since the beginning of the year, Indian companies have purchased diamonds from the Russian Federation for $863 million, which exceeds last year’s figure by 29%.
India is a key consumer of Russian diamonds. ALROSA at the request of India suspended diamond sales in September and October. Solution was taken at the request of the Indian authorities, the reason was cited as low demand. According to Reuters, G7 countries this month started to discuss options for banning the import of diamonds from Russia.
