In 2022, 7.7% of Yandex employees worked from abroad

Last year, Yandex employed 25,431 people, which is 20% more than in 2021. At the same time, 7.7% of them (1,958 people) worked in the company’s foreign offices, according to report about sustainable development.

“Most employees were employed in Russia (92.3%). The indicator takes into account both permanent and temporary employment contracts.

In 2022, the company’s employees, in addition to Russia, also worked in Armenia, Belarus, Israel, Kazakhstan, Serbia, etc. As specified in the report, these are mainly “specialists with significant professional experience, with a narrow and / or the most demanded specialization at the time of hiring.” According to information on the Yandex website, its offices are located in more than 20 cities around the world.

In 2020, Yandex employed a total of 15,666 employees, and the staff grew by 62% in two years. Such dynamics in the company was explained by business scaling. At the same time, the increase in the number of new employees in 2022 was lower than in 2021 (6,650 versus 8,858 people), due to the suspension of hiring in the middle of last year.

98.6% of the company’s employees worked last year under a permanent employment contract, another 1.4% had project employment with a specific completion date.

Earlier in April RBC with reference to quarterly financial statements Yandex NV reported that at the end of 2022, the total number of employees of the group “Yandex” abroad exceeded 1,700 people, almost three times more than in 2021. In total, the company employed 20,900 people as of April, up 16% year-over-year. This number does not include those who work part-time.

At the same time, the IT market then noted that about 90% of Yandex employees in the company’s international offices are those who left Russia.

After the announcement of the start of a special operation in Ukraine, there were several waves of emigration in Russia. The first wave occurred immediately after the start of the special operation in the spring of 2022, the second – after the announcement of partial mobilization in September 2022. There is no official information on how many people left Russia last year. On June 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that half of the Russians who left the country last fall had already returned.
