New old Queen song with legendary voice

I have always said that Freddie Mercury is a legend in the music world. His loss, which shook him in 1991, is a great tragedy for all of us. But recently the world received a gift – the new Queen song that they recorded with Freddie over 30 years ago – Face It Alone – was released. Powerful, poignant, pathetic – only Freddie could sing so piercingly … It turns out that the musicians accidentally found this recording, which was made in the late 80s. Roger Taylor and Brian May themselves were genuinely surprised by the find, talking about it in a radio interview, since they themselves had long forgotten that they were working on such a song.

“It was just some kind of miracle!” Brian shared his feelings. The song was recorded for the album The Miracle, which was released in 1989, but then for some reason the song was not included in the album. Soon Face It Alone will be available on 7″ vinyl, but thanks to the Internet, the whole world is already listening to it. Listens, admires, sad, nostalgic…

In addition, a collector’s edition of the band’s 13th album, the same The Miracle, will soon be released, supplemented not only by Face It Alone, but also by other songs that have not been released before and were discovered by the musicians in the archives of studio recordings. Face It Alone was the first song in eight years featuring Freddie’s voice to be released by Queen. Before that, this happened only in 2014, when three archival recordings were released on the Forever album: Let Me In Your Heart Again, Love Kills and There Must Be More To Life Than This, which were not published before and on which Freddie’s voice sounds.

Musicians from Queen came to Moscow a few years ago, they came to my center. We held their press conference. I did a tour of the studio for Brian May. Walking over to the iconic Neve-3 console, Brian recalled, “While we were recording on a similar console in London, I had the idea of how to find the original sound with a 100-meter coil of wire, passing the guitar sound through it.”

They talked a lot about music, about who came to the world of show business. It turned out that May studied at the faculty of astrophysics. As he told me, around the same time, he developed an interest in music and astronomy. He was then eight years old. And in general, he always successfully combined these two hobbies. He made his first guitar with his own hands, was a fan of The Shadows, in which Cliff Richard once started working, and really wanted to play their songs on his own, and for this he needed an instrument.

He recalled meeting Freddie. At the time of their meeting, Freddie worked in a clothing store in the market (of course, a very funny parallel, but for some reason I remembered our Anita Tsoi, who also started at the clothing market in Luzhniki – in the era of the initial shuttle accumulation of capital!). Brian recalled how, upon first meeting, Freddie “got in my face with his pom-poms.” He looked and behaved so strangely that May could not even imagine then that fate had pushed him at that moment with the future star of world rock and roll …

May met Roger Taylor in 1968. They told me this story, which initially also had nothing to do with music. In 1967, Taylor studied in London to become a dentist, but soon transferred to the Faculty of Biology at the London Polytechnic Institute. In 1968, he came across an ad that a young group needed a drummer. He came to the meeting, and so the fateful acquaintance of two future rock legends happened.

These people amazed me. The way they easily relate to the past, to all the amazing stories that have happened to them. They absolutely do not perceive it as some great contribution to the development of world music. It’s just the life they lived, the business they did, getting a real buzz from it. I think this is how real musicians should be – without a sense of their incredible importance and wearing a crown on their heads. Talented, funny people, sincerely passionate about their work. Now I see this less and less with young musicians. But still sometimes such groups come across. This inspires optimism.

The only thing I really regret is that my acquaintance with the musicians of the Queen group happened after the death of the brilliant musician and vocalist Freddie Mercury. I can imagine how cheerful and reckless our Moscow evenings could be then …
