What does Igor Butman live and do today? What is the meaning of art, and perhaps of all life?
— Igor Mikhailovich, what is the source of creative energy for you?
– For me, there are two essences that always fill me and lead me. First, it’s music. She is full of inspiration and energy. Music captures the inner world completely, one has only to touch it. It captures, leads, fills with emotions and energy. Second, it’s a sport. I have been playing hockey since childhood. And I am sure that if I had chosen hockey at one time, then my sports career would have developed at the same level as my music career has developed today. Hockey is the kind of energy that can lift me up at any time of the day or night. These are my sources.
— How close are sports and jazz, what do they have in common?
– Sports and jazz, music in general, this is what gives a person guidelines in life. Not only emotions, drive, excitement – all this, too, of course. What if we dig deeper? What is behind all this? This is the inner core, life position. A person who connected his life with music or sports, whether as a professional or as an amateur, he chose the path of self-improvement and self-development. Athletes and musicians live by serving their cause. In this they are unambiguously similar.
Are you only interested in hockey or are there other sports that are close and interesting to you?
– Sports cannot be uninteresting. This is competition, beauty, improvisation… Hockey is completely about me. I go out on the ice three times a week at different venues. If possible, I also play for the amateur St. Petersburg team “Nevsky Legion”. This is a league of hockey amateurs and non-professional players. Night, because during the day we all work, and in the evening we meet on the ice – we play with hockey stars and not only. Once I scored a puck from Vladimir Putin’s pass. He also plays in the Night League. Of course, it is unusual to play with the president of the country. And honorable.
— We know that you actively support young musicians. We founded the first and only jazz academy in Russia, organize and take part in music festivals and competitions for young performers…
— Each new generation comes to do something better than the previous one. You need to help in this, show what music can be, support and give the opportunity to develop.
– Do your fans have a chance to see you at the gala concert of the contest?
– If my work schedule allows me, then I will certainly be glad to meet with fans, friends, contestants. It will be a real celebration of music and sports. Of course I don’t want to miss this!
