Last Friday, one of the largest telecommunications companies in China and around the world, Huawei signed with the Chinese telecommunications company Oppo, an international cross-licensing agreement on a number of technologies, including 5G.
“After more than 20 years of innovation, Huawei has built a very broad portfolio of patents across a range of technologies, including 5G, Wi-Fi, audio and video codecs, and more,” said Alan Fan, Head of Huawei Intellectual Property. we are pleased to have signed a cross-licensing agreement with OPPO.”
By estimated observers, Huawei’s patent portfolio includes more than 100,000 patents. The Chinese company is one of the world’s largest 5G patent holders. However, due to the introduction in 2018-2019 under then US President Donald Trump sanctions From the US side, Huawei’s ability to sell 5G equipment has been significantly hampered. Huawei tried to challenge the decision in court, but so far this has not brought results.
In the first half of this year, Huawei’s profit fell doubled, including due to the consequences of the sanctions imposed against it. CNBC notes that, historically, Huawei has not been as active in monetizing its 5G patents as Nokia and Ericsson, for example, so the current agreement with Oppo could give Huawei a new source of revenue from its US-sanctioned 5G technologies.
