Investors are buying up sports franchises. Demand for them has increased by a third over the year, Kommersant FM was told by TopFranchise. Most often, clients are interested in small fitness studios near their homes; they are easier to open and find. The average transaction fee starts from 1 million. What do franchisees buy? To open a fitness club in Moscow from scratch you need at least 100 million rubles, Kommersant FM’s interlocutors say. You can buy a franchise for 50 million rubles. and enter into business under the brand of a famous sports club without spending money on advertising and promotion. And also get a discount of up to 40% on equipment. This is if we talk about large formats. And such franchises are now being bought by regions.
But in Moscow there is a boom in fitness studios near people’s homes – it’s easier to find a site and the franchise is cheaper. Olga Kiseleva, president of the Association of Fitness Industry Operators, explained how it works: “The franchising model is based on an initial payment, when an entrepreneur pays for know-how, for technology in order to launch a fitness club. It amounts to 1.5-2 million rubles. for the average network of fitness clubs. And then the club that has entered the franchise network pays annual royalties on gross revenue – approximately from 6% to 10%. If the profit is 18-25%.”
There are now about 140 offers for sports franchises on the market, which is almost 40% more than a year earlier, says TopFranchise founder Viktor Bolshakov: “The most popular are studios with a small budget. Check – from 1 million rubles. up to 3 million rubles If you assemble large clubs like World Class, you need huge investments – about 80 million rubles. The small format can be placed at 40 m, for example, a yoga studio. New residential complexes, the so-called human settlements, are optimal for opening various fitness centers. If you decide to buy a franchise, you must ask the franchisor for a guarantee that another similar studio will not open nearby within a certain radius.”
As a rule, the second sports club of the same network should not be closer than 3 km from the first, adds Bolshakov. And this clause must be specified in the commercial concession (franchising) agreement. Now the top requests are for small formats: yoga studios, stretching, boxing and everything related to children’s sports, especially in large residential areas of Moscow, adds the head of the Franshiza.ru catalog Anna Rozhdestvenskaya: “A school of football, volleyball, a school of boxing, martial arts is investments from 1 million rubles. In 2023, about 550 fitness facilities opened throughout Russia, and 80% of them are studios at 70-200 m, the Association of Fitness Industry Operators told Kommersant FM. But in the center of Moscow, even such a site is problematic, says Anastasia Yusina, founder of the Orange Fitness and City Fitness chains: “There is a very big problem in the center. I live on Novy Arbat, and I don’t have a fitness center nearby. The problem with working with developers is that they start offering you vacant sites only later. The infrastructure does not initially consider a fitness club, or it does exist, but as the designer sees it at the time of planning the residential complex. We just can’t go into the site, because there’s either a basement or corridors.”
Now you can enter the sports business with an investment of even 200 thousand rubles. For this money, a franchise for a dance school or fitness massage is available, stretching studios – from 500 thousand rubles, personal fitness studios – from 2 million rubles. But a full-fledged sports club from 1.5 thousand square meters. m under the guise of a well-known chain will cost at least 60 million rubles. The average yield is 15%. And, according to Kommersant FM’s interlocutors, relocants have already become interested in such projects.
