Mexico intoxicates, relaxes, tequila, mezcal, heat are superimposed on all this, and the warm Caribbean waves finally lull vigilance…
Our first female ambassador, Alexandra Kollontai, once wrote: “A curious country, full of echoes of the ancient culture of the Aztecs and Mayans, and all trembling with the impulse towards the most progressive future.”
Many of our compatriots fell in love with Mexico, and in general, Mexicans like Russians. Mayakovsky wrote: “Years and centuries! No matter how you mow the bowed heads of the days, the gnarled stones of Mexico City will whisper the past to me.” Mayakovsky was enchanted by the country. He dreamed of returning here and walking from Mexico City to Veracruz.
Long before Mayakovsky, the prima of the Russian ballet Anna Pavlova visited here. The Mexicans were delighted. Everyone couldn’t get to her performances in the capital’s cramped theaters, and then she decided to dance in the bullring. But not all spectators got there either. Pavlova came to Mexico twice…
The poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko went to the central market of Mexico City almost every morning, had breakfast with the movers and butchers, read his poems to them… And Vysotsky even visited the island of Cozumel, Marina Vladi starred there in the film “The Secret of the Bermuda Triangle.” In Mexico, as the poet himself admitted, he experienced an extraordinary surge of inspiration. The manuscript of his poem “Stubbornly I Strive to the Bottom,” written by him on hotel letterhead, has been preserved.
And finally, Lev Davidovich Trotsky, whose museum is open in Mexico City. He is studied at school along with Lenin and Stalin. Here the demon of revolution calmed down, relaxed, and began to breed rabbits. And here he received a fatal blow with an ice ax. Mortally wounded, he shouted to the guards not to kill Mercader, so that he would tell everything… Ramon Mercader served 20 years in a Mexican prison. Then he lived in Cuba. Shortly before his death he received the star of the Hero of the Soviet Union.
